IT’S MONDAY! WHAT ARE YOU READING?

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week.
The Godfather by Mario Puzo. I can’t believe you haven’t read this. This is what I keep hearing when so tell others what I am reading this week. I can’t believe I haven’t read this! I have seen the movie countless times in its entirety and bits and pieces and it always ranks in the top…five? Will I love the book more than the movie or is it a different animal like Gone With the Wind? Regardless, I feel I am ending 2015 on a good note with this one closing out my read list.
I finished Tawni O’Dell’s Angel’s Burning and can say this is a good southern crime novel set in small town Pennsylvania. I swear I heard a twang or two in some of the voices! This has got murder, adultery, family secrets, sibling rivalry with what should be a southern gothic edge but isn’t. O’Dell’s skill in dialogue really comes through with depicting the eleven-year-old Mason who is wise and fragile. The female police chief, Dove, is a great character as is her dog trainer sister and I hope to see them back. This isn’t just a whodunit. O’Dell expresses some ponderous turn of phrase throughout along with some wicked humor. An overall writing win!
I’m listening to Patti Smith narrate her M Train and I love her. First, I always prefer listening to authors read their own work. Their words, their inflection etc. Etc. Smith has this lazy Jersey drawl and to listen to her pronunciation with her special attention to diction makes it that much more authentic to my ear. Kind of like a youse guys kind of French, if you will. Her voice is black coffee. Her words, crazy  dream-filled sleep.
What do you like to listen to? Professional narrators, actors, authors?
Next week, I’ll turn to some holiday reading. Any suggestions?
